Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome is an eye disease that  unfortunately affects an estimated 20 million people in America. Dry eye symptoms such as light sensitivity, blurred vision, red eyes, itchy eyes, and dryness can affect a person’s quality of life and their vision. There are many causes of dry eye and the they type of dry eye should be determined by your eye doctor. Once diagnosed ,the proper course of dry eye treatment plan can be tailored to fit a patient’s symptoms. At the Dry Eye Center of Maryland, Dr. Azman has a dedicated dry eye team and the most up to date dry eye instrumentation for diagnosing and treatment.

Dry Eye Defined

New Dry Eye Treatment: A diagram showing the lacrimal apparatus

A dry eye disorder in which the lacrimal glands (tear producers) fail to produce enough of the watery component of tears to maintain a healthy eye surface.

Evaporative Dry Eye:
Dry eye due to the loss of the tear film evaporation, rather than aqueous deficiency.
Caused from inflammation of the meibomian glands, also located in the eyelids. The meibomian glands make the lipid or oily part of tears that slows evaporation and keeps the tears stable. Evaporative dry eye is also commonly known as MGD, meibomian gland dysfunction.

New Dry Eye Treatments

LipiFlow Dry Eye Treatment:
LipiFlow®, a new dry eye treatment, is a procedure designed to treat MGD, meibomian gland dysfunction, blocked Meibomian glands. Opening and clearing these blocked glands can allow them to resume natural production of lipids (oils) needed for a healthy tear film.

At the heart of the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is the Activator (eyepiece). The Activator uses patented, precisely controlled heat applied to the inner eyelid with adaptive pressure encouraging your body to resume the natural production of lipids (oils) needed for your tear film. Its single-use design and built-in sensors ensure a safe, sterile treatment. The treatment is performed in a doctor’s office — and in some cases, on the same day as your evaluation.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) For Treating Dry Eye:
IPL new dry eye treatment,  is not a laser, but a light-based therapy. A key component to an unstable tear-film is MGD, meibomian gland dysfunction. When the glands are not producing a proper lipid (oily) layer, the tear-film is unstable and will rapidly evaporate. Furthermore, if the meibomian glands’ oily secretions are stuck inside the glands, inflammation can set in and exacerbate the problem.

Using bursts of light, IPL is directed at the eyelids, targeting the abnormal blood vessels to increase the flow of impacted meibomian secretion. The stagnant material is then often manually expressed.

With over 38 years of experience and utilizing old and new dry eye treatments the Doctors at the Dry Eye Center of MD will always do what’s best for you and your eyes. A positive outcome is dependent on the proper diagnosis. Using the latest in dry eye technology we are able to determine the type of dry eye and how to effectively treat it.

Not able to wear contact lenses

When I came to Azman Eye Care Specialists, I was unable to wear my contact lenses any Not able to wear contact lenses longer. My vision was poor, and the contacts were constantly becoming either clouded or dirty.

Due to Dr. Irwin Azman’s expert care and attention, my problems were diagnosed. After completing several different types of tests, and after trying various contact lenses, I was fitted with a comfortable pair of lenses that I could see quite well with.

Your expertise and your attention to detail were most helpful in the process of solving my contact lens and vision problem. In addition, your staff was always gracious and helpful.

As a result, I have since recommended all of my family members to Dr. Irwin Azman at Azman Eye Care Specialists. Thank you again for all of your help.

Dr. Azman did what three other doctors could not…

I’m writing to thank Dr Irwin Azman for doing what three other doctors couldn’t—make it possible for me to wear my lenses again.

My eyes have always been sensitive, but with the help of a sympathetic optometrist, I had managed to wear lenses until I turned 43, when my contacts became increasingly uncomfortable.

My ophthalmologist told me my eyes’ tear quality had deteriorated with the onset of middle age; he prescribed artificial tears. These gave me relief for a while, but a year later my eyes were more irritated than ever. This time, he simply said I had GPC and prescribed medication (which didn’t help). He was stumped.

I called my optometrist, who switched me to ProClear Compatibles, which provoked the condition more. I tried a second ophthalmologist; he said I could try switching from lens to lens, but suggested my contact-wearing days might be over. By this time, I was wearing glasses and feeling miserable (my high prescription is very noticeable). Finally, I did a Google search under “dry eye” and Dr Irwin Azman came up.

When I called Azman Eye Care, the receptionist said you’d phone me to discuss my problem. That impressed me, but not as much as when I received a call from you later that day from Florida, where you were on vacation! I was encouraged by your patience in listening, and your confidence that you could help.

On the first visit, I was thrilled to hear, “Well, here clearly is the problem.” You not only had more knowledge than the other doctors I’d seen, but you also had equipment useful for assessing my condition; for example, a machine that took a photo of my corneal cells and a video screen magnifier allowing you (and me) to see the problem in large view.

Following the visit, my eyes soon felt well enough to wear the lenses you prescribed. My eyes felt great for the first time in years. And your concern about my case, calling to see how I was doing (the first eye doctor in 33 years of wearing lenses to do that), and taking time to answer every question, was much appreciated, and a great contrast to the other doctors who simply said, “I don’t know.”

Because of you, I feel confident again about my appearance when I go to a business meeting. I appreciate your encouragement and proactive approach—but most of all, the expertise that put me back in my lenses again! I know two people who have dry eye problems, and I have recommended them to you and have told almost everyone I know about how you succeeded where others have failed. Many thanks!

Contact Lens Eye Care: The way it should be

When it comes to contact lens eye care, there are a lot of different options out there. But when you want the highest quality, most meticulous contact lens eye care in Maryland, you have to see Drs. Thomas and Irwin Azman at Azman Eye Care Specialists.

Founded in 1975 by the two brothers as a specialty practice limited to contact lens care, Azman Eye Care Specialists has since been recognized both nationally and internationally for excellence not just in the contact lens field, but also in dry eye care.

Azman Eye Care has the expertise and specialized equipment to focus on contact lens eye care problems that other offices can’t address: helping dry-eye patients, treating patients who have trouble wearing contact lenses, need bifocal lenses or those who have been told they can’t wear contact lenses. The Azman Eye Care practice maintains all the latest diagnostic equipment available. They have the latest instruments that can be found in only a few places in the country, including a wavefront topographer, which can detect slight irregularities of the cornea. The practice is also continually involved in FDA studies involving contact lenses, contact lens solutions, dry eye diagnosis and treatment. All of their specialized testing offers the highest quality contact lens eye care to each and every patient.

Many contact lens wearers and eye doctors believe that dry eyes are a normal part of wearing contact lenses and that nothing can be done about the problem. Symptoms like eye fatigue, red eyes, and slightly blurred vision are all symptoms that can be addressed. The problem is that many offices do not have the knowledge and experience to manage and treat these critical symptoms. That’s why patients come from Texas, Florida, Oregon, Colorado, New York, New Jersey and other states for the expert contact lens care that they can’t find anywhere else.

The Azman Eye Care team of doctors, technicians and staff work together to offer the most meticulous and personalized contact lens eye care available.

The doctors listen carefully to patients and develop treatment plans for each person and situation. “The most common complaint we get from people about doctors they have seen in the past is about the quality of the examination,” says Dr. Thomas Azman. “A meticulous, comprehensive contact lens eye examination is essential,” he says. “Not an eye-glass exam, but one specifically for contact lenses.” Dr. Irwin Azman continues, “Most eye doctors see about 3,000 patients a year, and because of that they have less time to do a thorough review of a patient’s medical records and history. As a result, they don’t always have a complete picture of the patient’s contact lens and eye-care background.” In contrast, the doctors at Azman Eye Care limit their patient load to 1,200 patients per year, allowing them to gather all the facts pertinent to each patient’s visual and contact lens requirements.

The doctors at Azman Eye Care ask about symptoms that many people live with, thinking they are normal. They take the time to listen to their patients’ needs and symptoms, and then discuss and explain all the contact lens treatment options available. Many doctors also limit the type of lenses that they fit to patients. Azman Eye Care Specialists are different. They prescribe the best contact lens for the individual’s visual needs. As a result, their patients are comfortable and have crisp and clear vision all wearing hours.

The differences between Azman Eye Care team and other seemingly similar practices are clear. Azman Eye Care has the state-of-the-art diagnostic instruments necessary to help their patients, but use them with customized care, knowledge and compassion. The doctors at Azman Eye Care form a relationship with their patients, and that is a rarity today. They have received hundreds of testimonials from patients expressing their gratitude for resolving problems that other doctors could not. Dr. Thomas Azman says, “I am most proud that each and every patient leaves my office with the understanding that they know we care about their eyes and their well-being.” That’s a level of commitment and service you won’t often find in today’s other offices.

Not a candidate for contact lenses…

“Not a candidate for contact lenses…”

I am currently a patient of Dr. Irwin Azman. I underwent cataract surgery of my right eve in January and now have an astigmatism problem in that eye. In addition. I have a cataract in my left eye and also have the normal reading vision problems that comes with age.
I was simply told by my previous
optometrist that I am not a candidate for contact lenses. That was that. Nothing else was said. So I continued with glasses. Since going to Dr. Azman, he and his staff have spent an enormous amount of time doing tests and fitting me for contact lenses. Even though I get frustrated. Dr. Irwin Azman persists in trying to keep “tweaking” the prescription to make my vision as good as possible. I now can see better with my contacts than with my glasses!! Dr. Irwin Azman has taken a lot of time and effort in order for me to be able to wear contact lenses and I would not hesitate referring anyone wanting the same.
